Writing

Writing Intent

At Bryn Offa C of E Primary School, our intent for English is to develop articulate, confident, and enthusiastic readers, writers, and communicators who can express themselves clearly and creatively. We aim to foster a lifelong love of  writing, providing our pupils with the tools they need to succeed across the curriculum and in life beyond school.

Writing Implementation

In writing, we use a blended approach drawing on Pathways to Write, Talk for Writing and a cross curricular approach often linked to our whole class texts. These approaches provide a clear and progressive framework that builds children's skills through modelled, shared, and independent writing. We aim for all children to write with purpose, clarity, creativity, and accuracy, developing strong grammar, vocabulary, and transcription skills. Our goal is for pupils to become thoughtful and reflective writers who can plan, draft, revise, and evaluate their own work. Pupil’s writing is formally assessed half termly during moderation sessions which is used to set future interventions and targets.

Writing Impact

As a result of our writing curriculum, pupils at Bryn Offa become confident, purposeful and increasingly independent writers who can communicate effectively for a range of audiences and purposes. Through the consistent use of Pathways to Write, Talk for Writing and meaningful cross-curricular writing opportunities, pupils develop a secure understanding of the writing process, enabling them to plan, draft, edit and improve their work with increasing confidence and accuracy.

Pupils demonstrate progressive development in transcription, grammar, punctuation, vocabulary and composition, applying these skills across the curriculum. They write with increasing fluency, stamina and creativity, selecting appropriate language and organisational features to suit different genres and audiences. Through regular oral rehearsal, modelled writing and shared writing, pupils develop the confidence to express their ideas clearly and effectively.

Writing moderation and half-termly assessment ensure that teachers have an accurate understanding of pupils' attainment and progress. This enables targeted support and interventions to be implemented promptly, ensuring that all pupils, including those with SEND and disadvantaged pupils, are supported to achieve their potential and make good progress from their individual starting points.

By the time pupils leave Bryn Offa, they are resilient, reflective and ambitious writers who take pride in their work and understand the importance of writing as a tool for communication, creativity and learning. They leave primary school equipped with the knowledge, skills and confidence to write effectively across the curriculum and are well prepared for the demands of secondary education and beyond.
