Personal, Social & Health Education

Intent

It is our aim here at Bryn Offa to ensure that we provide a comprehensive and engaging PSHE Curriculum which fully meets the need of every child.  It is our understanding that each child arrives at our school in a position unique to themselves and we therefore develop skills and understanding from this personal baseline.  We understand that social skills and learning readiness are unique to each and every child and therefore tailor and adapt our PSHE curriculum in order to meet these needs.

As a school we value and recognise high-quality life skills education.  We ensure that we educate all our young minds that the management of these skills is essential in order for each child to meet their potential.   Our curriculum supports PSHE, RSE, Health education, SMSC development, Fundamental British Values and safeguarding.  Whilst ensuring our programme of study provides full coverage of the statutory elements of Relationship Education and Health Education it is vital that we go beyond this and support our children in the development of the skills required, at all ages, to manage as part of their personal development concepts such as; difference, influence, resilience and pressure.

We understand and have observed that it is during Primary School that many children will, for the first time, encounter many of life’s challenges and it is through inspiring, relevant and meaningful teaching and learning that we believe we provide our pupils with the knowledge and skills required to lead safe, healthy and happy lives.

At Bryn Offa CE Primary School we believe that ensuring a high-quality PSHE/RSE curriculum will inspire pupils to develop their curiosity and fascination about the world around them, and support them in developing as conscientious, healthy global citizens.  Our aim is to teach the skills and knowledge necessary to develop children as confident well-rounded individuals.

Within Bryn Offa, children are encouraged to play a positive role in contributing to the life of the school and the wider community, formally through School Council meetings and informally through building warm relationships among the school community.

Implementation

At Bryn Offa CE Primary School we implement the 1Decision Scheme of work for PSHE Education, Citizenship and Seal in order to give our pupils an effective PSHE curriculum so that we give our children the skills they need to succeed in their school life and in the future.

Through our curriculum we cover the requirements of the national curriculum.

Teachers are given plans that are taught once a week which cover the requirements of the National Curriculum however, the teaching of PSHE is cross curricular and is implemented throughout our curriculum. PSHE is also to be addressed on a daily basis as questions and incidents arise. Teachers hold reflection time at the end of the day to address questions raised through circle times or to discuss events from the day, this allows children to reflect on their understanding and gives the children responsibility for their learning.

Each classroom has a designated board where PSHE/British Values and RSE learning can be displayed, teachers use these boards to reinforce the learning that has taken place and use these as a basis for their discussions at reflection times.

We feel that it is imperative that PSHE is taught now as children are facing more pressures within a modern society and we need to support our children to navigate through the challenges they may face and give them the knowledge and confidence they need in order to thrive.

Impact

Through the teaching of PSHE lessons in Bryn Offa CE Primary School our children will have the knowledge and understanding of how to succeed in their future social and personal lives as well as their roles in society. They will be equipped with tools to maintain healthy and positive lifestyles with regard to relationships, diet and their own personal identity. Through our PSHE lessons we want our pupils to develop respect for themselves and others. We also want our pupils to recognise and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty. We want our children to strive to be the best they can be and have high hopes and aspirations for their school work and for their futures.
